Food Truck Friday

Over the past few months we’ve been posting about Nashville food trucks and their offerings. Since we love food trucks so much we have decided to make the first Friday of every month (drum roll please)… FOOD TRUCK FRIDAY. We will continue sharing the photographs we take of the trucks and their owners along with some delicious looks at what they have to offer. Up Close Bar Food

You may have seen our previous posts about Up Close foods. These are just more examples of the fun details we end up seeing when photographing food on set here in the studio. If you’re curious about our equipment, we typically shoot with medium format PhaseOne digital backs (P40+ and IQ150). They give us 40 to 50 megapixels of what I like to call “happy pixels”. Honestly, it’s kinda overkill for an image that’s gonna end up being a 4-inch square on a menu, but there are times when that small image needs to be used on a billboard or large point-of-sale poster. So, there you have my justification for having such big (high resolution) files. I also have justifications for eating chocolate, but I’ll save that post for another day. – Kyle

National Pancake Day

Yes, today is September 26 and it is “National Pancake Day,” but is it officially “National Pancake Day?” Who said so?

According the website nationaldaycalendar.com, it is an “unofficial national holiday.” But is nationaldaycalendar.com the official source, or is the McGraw Hill Chase’s Calendar of Events the official source of official (and unofficial) days? I’m so confused.

We actually found multiple pancake days, each with its own variation.

IHOP has designated a “National Pancake Day” in March where they actually raise money for charities…$16 million since its 2006 inception. Nice!

There’s also a pancake day called Shrove Tuesday…the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. That’s also Fat Tuesday, so I guess pancakes go with self-indulgence in this case. Pancakes are self-indulgence for me.

Michael Park of Bon Apetit does a nice job of educating us on what makes a national day a “national day,” or not.

By the way, apparently today is also National Shamu the Whale Day. You can insert your own punchline here.

In the meantime, here are some “official” pancake images from our own “official” archives. Enjoy. – Kyle

BBQ Ribs

We’ve been enjoying creating these simple graphic still life compositions. Naturally I choose subject matter I like…in this case BBQ ribs from Martin’s BBQ in Nashville. Their corn-cakes are super tasty and they look like pancakes. They call them “cornbread hoe-cakes”, I call them “yummy!” The ribs are…er, uh…were good, too. – Kyle

Southern Biscuits Video

How about some southern style biscuits? I say yes. This little piece is from some video testing we’ve been doing here internally. Thanks to all our crew on this. You always go beyond expectations. I foresee more southern style foods in our near future. – Kyle
