Standard Breakfast

I guess it could be raised as a question, “What is the standard breakfast?” For me eggs and bacon were pretty much the standard. Remind me to tell you about the time my brother and I put a fake egg in the fridge and watched my mom try her darndest to crack it open when making us breakfast one morning. So, bacon and eggs. I’d say they merit the “standard breakfast” moniker. I’m also a fan of the eggs and bacon combo for other meals. These days in our house most Sunday nights are breakfast-for-dinner night, and my boys are the ones making it happen (plus pancakes or biscuits). Here are some photos we did here in the studio with local food stylist Hannah Messinger. We made it a day of play, and play we did…with eggs and bacon.

Fasting Mimicking

Until I met Austin Gil I had not heard of “fasting mimicking”. He has taken this concept and developed a program to help your body fast without completely depriving it during the process. In an effort to help communicate what I’d call “fasting-mimicking-in-a-box” he turned to us to come up with a set of photographs for his company’s website. We wanted to show how “fasting” doesn’t have to be boring or bland. The following are the results from our shoot for Lifebox. We though a little color would help sell the idea. What do you think?

Food Truck Friday – Southern Comfort

It’s a celebration of fried foods, bbq, grits, cornbread and collared greens! Today is all about the south. Being from Mississippi, I am a huge fan of southern cuisine. It is often described as comfort food which couldn’t be more accurate. Depending on where you grew up in the south, the food that is comforting to you could be completely different than the food that comforts me. For me, it’s fried chicken or fried catfish and my all time favorite food, cornbread. If you follow our blog you know that Kyle and I have had the pleasure of shooting for the Nashville Food Truck Association (NFTA). We have been able to see tons of trucks and the different types of food that they serve. It should be no surprise that southern comfort foods are abundant. With trucks that serve everything from fried catfish, to country fried steak to crawfish, that taste of home isn’t far away. These trucks also expand on the whole “comfort” aspect too since they basically come to you. What could be more comfortable than that?  So if you have had a rough week go find your nearest comfort food truck and let your favorite food take you home.

Breakfast Anyone?

It’s no secret…I’m a fan of breakfast. It’s almost like permission to have dessert for breakfast…waffles, pancakes, French toast. Egg and I, however, gives you choices to make breakfast actually healthy, if you’re into that sort of thing. Here are a few of the offerings (some healthier than others) we shot for them…from Cheese Cake French Toast to a good ol’ Farmer’s Eggs & Hash. Take your pick.

Flying Food

For years I’ve had it in my mind that food was meant to fly. I’ve struggled with something called gravity—food seemed to prefer to fall, not fly. We’ve recently found an anti-gravity area in the studio where food can be happy, free from the laws of gravity and, for the most part, able to fly at will. We were able to capture some of these spontaneous flights as seen below. We’ve been asked if we did these with fishing line, Photoshop or other trickery. We actually did each of these in one shot—albeit one messy shot.

Food Truck Friday – BBQ

Today’s food truck Friday is all about the southern food that so many love… barbecue. In the south BBQ is king. You cannot go 10 minutes between Texas and the Carolinas without seeing a BBQ joint that probably sells “The Best BBQ in the Country.” While the love of BBQ does span most of the country do not think that that makes all BBQ equal. Even though it all goes by the same name, its styles are regional and loyalties run deep. Brisket or pulled pork? Is the sauce vinegar, ketchup, mustard, or even molasses based? Wet (sauced) ribs or dry rubbed ribs? Preferences and recipes change as you move around the country and depending on the region you are in, the BBQ can be quite different. Here’s where the food trucks come in.

Food trucks make regional BBQ a thing of the past. You have options… loyalties are given a chance to soften. With all sorts of BBQ food trucks roaming around you are sure to find the type of BBQ you grew up eating and then some. Food trucks, like the Love Bus, even put a spin on traditional BBQ by making BBQ egg rolls. If more traditional ‘cue is for you, then there is no shortage of options. Below we’re showing 3 of around 12 BBQ trucks that we have photographed. 12 trucks devoted to BBQ and that’s just the ones we have captured on camera. Don’t buy a plane ticket back home to Texas just so you can have some brisket; go out on a nice day and find a food truck. Spring is here and summer is just around the corner, so walk outside and follow your nose. I’m sure the smell of BBQ will be in the air.
